His first major role came in 1988 when Whitaker starred in the lead role as Charlie Parker in the movie Bird. Whitaker was accepted to the University of Southern California Music Conservatory, where he was planning to study Opera, but he chose to enter the University’s Drama Conservatory. During the 1980s, he was a part of the group Cal Poly Chamber Singers, with whom he toured England. However, after a back injury, he had to change his major to music.
